White bedroom furniture turned yellow

A lady has a white bedroom set that is turning yellow in places and beige in other places which will normally happen with age.

Sometimes this is called ambering and sometimes is desirable to some people to show that the furniture piece has age, but at 10 years old this lady would prefer to have her furniture the original white all over.

It's pretty easy to restore it to it's original nice appearance. See below for how it's done.

White bedroom furniture turned yellow

Email question:

Hi, I have a furniture dilemma, Hope you can help. I have a lacquer white bedroom set that came from Italy. My question to you is, It is turning yellow in some areas and beige in other areas and Only three drawers stayed white.  What the heck can I do to make a beautiful bedroom set be like it was????I thought about using steel wool and trying to repaint it white and I thought about using that spray that adheres to plastic. I have had the set only 10 yrs. Hope you can help.

Hi Anna

Age will cause ambering

That's just kind of one of those things that happen over the years. The discoloring of white painted furniture is called ambering and is pretty normal. The best thing to do is to rejuvenate it with a face lift paint job.

Surface preparation

Surface preparation is about 90% of a good job. It will usually take less time to do a good job of preparation than it would take to have something go wrong and have to re-do the whole job.

Use a furniture cleaner

You can clean any wax or polish buildup with a good furniture cleaner, such as Prelude Furniture Cleaner. Use 0000 steel wool with the cleaner to be sure to get all old polish and/or wax off. Even a pin head amount left can cause paint to not stick. A step farther down this email can minimize that problem though.

Liquid deglosser will save time and energy

Next use a liquid deglosser to prepare the surface and give it "tooth" to accept the new paint. The deglosser will usually remove any remnants of wax or polish. Liquid deglosser is a lot easier to use than sanding and will save a lot of time.

Prime your white furniture with a good sealer

Now that the surface is clean and ready to start the new paint you can prime it with a good primer, such as Zinsser Bullseye SealCoat They claim that the SealCoat will work with all finishes. After it dries it's easily sandable with a fine sandpaper to give a good smooth surface for the new paint. This stuff sticks to just about anything, including minor amounts of wax or polish, so it should seal in any pinhead amounts that could effect the final paint.

Spray paint in cans is easier to use

Using paint in spray cans is about the easiest way to get a good even smooth paint finish.

Gold trim, gilding

You don't mention if your furniture is trimmed with gold, generally most white painted furniture is trimmed with a color and gold is the most popular, because white and gold goes with almost any other colors. Either the Rub-n-Buff or the Baroque Art Guilders Paste is the easiest to use. You just put it on your bare finger and rub it on. It lasts for years and if it does get scratched or bumped it's easy to put more on. Fingernail polish remover will clean your finger off afterward.
