Refinish Furniture

Apply tung oil to wicker furniture for protection.

Tung oil is a good product to use on your wicker patio furniture. It's pretty easy to use and provides good protection, as well as giving your wicker furniture a nice appearance. Be sure to apply to the underneath part of the wicker too. See below how to apply the tung oil.

Apply Tung Oil To Wicker Furniture

Email Question:

Can I use an oil to refinish my rattan chairs which are very weathered. I was thinking of a tung oil which is a combination of wax and oil which I was thinking would refresh the natural color and give it some protection. They are our patio chairs.

Thanks for any helpful advice.

Jeanne

Reply to Question:

Yes, oil is good for rattan and tung oil is an excellent product.

Unless you've found some specialized product that someone has managed to mix tung oil and wax to make a suitable product, tung oil doesn't have any wax content.

Straight 100% tung oil is quite thick and could be more difficult to use on rattan, as it would be difficult to wipe the excess from between the strands. There are products, generally called tung oil finish, or something similar, that are 100% tung oil thinned with solvents that make it easier to remove excess with a dry brush method.

Both types of tung oil are available at our catalog page Clear Finishes. The Rockler's 100% pure tung oil is totally tung oil without solvents and the Chinawood Deck Oil is tung oil with environmentally friendly solvents to thin it for easier use. After the solvents evaporate there is nothing left but tung oil. Chinawood oil is another name for tung oil, which was discovered and perfected in China several centuries ago.

Jeanne had another question:

Is there such a thing as tung oil in a spray can???

And my reply:

I've never seen it in spray cans, but it sure would be handy.

It's not too difficult to apply with a paint brush. If you pour the tung oil into a pan and use about a four inch paint brush it goes pretty quickly. Apply to the top surfaces first. Let it soak in for a few minutes, then using a dry paint brush remove as much of the excess as possible. Keep wiping the dry brush with a cloth or paper towels as you work.

After the top is done turn the furniture upside down and apply to the underneath parts. Each time you remove the excess from the underneath side turn the furniture back right side up and check to be sure there aren't any dribbles on the top surface
