Refinishing Teak Furniture

If your teak outdoor furniture is a natural teak brown color it means that it has some type of finish on it and you can use the same procedure as is used for refinishing indoor teak furniture

Weathered Silver Gray Teak Outdoor Furniture

If your teak furniture has a silvery gray color it means that it probably doesn't have anything on it and is holding it's own with it's natural oils. If you want to leave your outdoor teak furniture in it's natural state you'll probably need to clean it as it tends to get pretty dirty outside in it's natural state. We have a separate page devoted to cleaning teak outdoor furniture

Change To Natural Brown Teak Furniture

If your teak has a silvery gray color and you want it to be a natural warm teak brown and stay that way. There will be a little bit of elbow grease involved.

Sand off the silver gray appearance

This is brute force sanding the gray stuff off of your teak patio furniture. For this method I'd recommend investing in a vibrating finish sander. You won't be able to sand all areas of all the teak furniture with the finishing sander, but using a sander on the flat surfaces can save a lot of time and sore muscles. There are lots of sanding aids too, sanding pads, sanding cord, sanding curves and sanding sponges.

If the surface of your teak outdoor furniture is pretty rough it would probably be a good idea to start sanding with 150 grit sandpaper and graduate to 180.

If you sand by hand be sure to use a sanding block to keep the sandpaper flat and make sure your flat surfaces don't have dip wowies in them.

Always, always, without fail, sand with the direction of the grain. If you sand across grain it will show in the final finish.

Finishing Your Teak Outdoor Furniture

You will want to have the surface as smooth as possible for applying a finish so the final sanding should be with 220 grit sandpaper. Be very careful to sand all surfaces equally, as differences in sanding will show after the final finish. The next step is the finish, which is on a separate page, as there are different ways to finish teak outdoor furniture
