Resin Patio furniture chair Care

A new addition to your patio furniture, resin chairs always look so nice when you first bring them home, nice and shiny and clean. After some use they start to look used, then after a rain when there's dust in the air they really start looking used and after water has set in the seat and evaporated, especially most city water that's full of chemicals, they start looking like very used and stained patio furniture.

Resin Patio furniture chair Care

This is one of our resin patio chairs that spent the winter in the elements. We normally stack our resin patio furniture and cover it with a tarp for the winter, which can be very snowy and harsh in our part of the country, but that duty slipped through the cracks last fall.

This will be the fourth summer for this chair and several of it's kinfolk. Notice the stains in the seat. There were leaves sitting in moisture making a potent tea and it left some pretty bad stains.

You can click on the picture to see a larger one that shows the stains better. The larger picture opens in a new window, so you can just close the window to be back here.

Orange oil to the rescue of the patio furniture

orange oilI cleaned the chairs with Orange Oil first. A soft cloth or paper towels work well with the orange oil. I wouldn't use any abrasive substances like steel wool of any grade, because the resin patio chairs are generally a high gloss and the steel wool, even 0000, would dull the gloss. If you have the matte finish resin patio furniture and bad stains you might try some steel wool underneath the chair where it can't be seen first, then if it doesn't change the appearance it should be ok to use on stains.

Resin chairs not properly cleaned before

This is kind of a case of the shoemakers children going barefoot. I've never properly cleaned our resin chairs before. Just some soap and water and squirt 'em with the hose, so they had gotten to looking like they needed lots of TLC.

After quite a few people emailed requesting information about how to do the job I looked for the quickest, easiest way. I tried cleaners and polishes of several types, but the best was the orange oil. It cleaned up the stains quickly and without much effort.

If you have white patio furniture with stains that don't come out readily with the orange oil you might try some household bleach mixed one part bleach to nine parts water.

Use Meguiars Quik Detailer on your patio furniture

meguiars quik detailerAfter using the orange oil I used Meguiars Quik Detailer mist and wipe.

The mist and wipe is designed for use on cars between waxing jobs and the container says that it can be sprayed on dusty finishes and wiped with a soft cloth without scratching the finish.

We've had some pretty strong winds blowing a lot of dust around and our dust is kind of sandy gritty. There have been just enough rain drops to make a mess of shiny things, including my newly cleaned resin chair, so the Quik Detailer got it's second test. I just sprayed it on the chair, dust and all, and wiped it off. The chair looked the same as it did when I first cleaned it. Real quick and easy procedure for cleaning patio furniture.

resin chair afterHere is our formerly stained and dirty resin chair after the cleaning treatment. It looked the same as this after the dust episode too.

A little orange oil, auto detailer and lots of elbow grease can make your patio furniture look like new.
