Measure and check veneer

Continuing from Page 1 How to veneer kitchen cabinets We've made it through the measuring and checking the kitchen cabinets for squareness, now it's time to apply their new veneer face.

The prestigious name is pressure sensitive flexible veneer. If we were to get kind of frivolous or to use a name that sounds like it's real easy stuff to use we could call it peel 'n' stick wood veneer. The original veneer on your kitchen cabinets was applied at a factory and probably rolled evenly with a few thousand pounds per square inch of pressure. That much pressure helps, but isn't a requirement for a good job of veneering which will last for many, many years.

Apply The Wood Veneer To The Kitchen Cabinets

Decide on an edge of your kitchen cabinet part to start, making allowance for the squareness that you've already checked. A kitchen cabinet door laid flat is a good place to start and complete all of the doors to get the feel of applying the veneer before you go to the ends, stiles and frames.

Peel the paper from the first couple of inches along the edge of the piece of veneer and position the piece as near to the edge as you can, leaving a very slight overlap, then gently tap it down several places along the edge. The wood veneer should be stuck down enough that it won't move when you don't want it to, but hopefully will come up if you need for it to. The stuff is the last word in sticky and generally when it's laid and pressed you will never lift it or reposition it in any manner.

Very carefully reach underneath and start removing the backing paper and as you remove the paper smooth the veneer with your hand across the center of the up and down distance of the piece you're veneering. As you're smoothing across, radiate your smoothing from the center out in both directions, so that when you get to the final edge the wood veneer is smoothed onto the piece in all directions so that there aren't any bubbles or wrinkles.

Press The Veneer To Last A Lifetime

Veneer Smoothing BladeVeneer Smoothing Blade is a good tool for pressing veneer onto a surface and will get into tight corners real well. Always start at the center of the surface you're working on and radiate out pressing the veneer smoothing blade as hard on the veneer as you can.

Be careful not to tilt the veneer smoothing blade while you're pressing as the corner of the blade can leave an indent that would be very difficult to remove.

Veneer Rollers Veneer Rollers are good for rolling veneer to press it as securely as possible. Be sure to start in the center and roll out in all directions. I prefer rolling to using a blade. This veneer roller is pretty narrow so there will be a lot of trips back and forth to roll out the complete surface. This size of roller is ideal for rolling on pressure sensitive veneer tape on edges of doors and other surfaces.

Power Roller for Laminates and Veneer This is the granddaddy, or in some cases the grandmommy, of veneer rollers. You can grip this roller with both hands and bear all the weight you can muster to press the wood veneer. The roller is 6 inches wide, so it covers a lot of territory with each roll. As always, be sure to start in the center and roll all directions.

Although lots of pressure is good, a 90 pound 60 year old housewife can do just as good and just as lasting a job veneering as a 200 pound 20 year old muscle builder.
