Christie Owens <Christiewns@yahoo.com> - Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 16:49:03 (EST) Thanks for this site. I am about to repaint my kitchen cabinets, and although I have experience, this site is great for having all the steps and needed materials in one place! I do have a question: on some of my drawers, the edges of the raised center piece (raised rectangle within the rectangle of the drawer - I forget the term)have worn down to the bare wood, and have lost the crisp edge. Should I try to restore it, or just sand down the other drawers to match? I thought about replacing all the drawer fronts but haven't priced that out yet. Do you have advice for me? Thanks Virginia Corrigan <vmcorrigan@comcast.net> - Sunday, May 15, 2005 at 09:40:37 (EST) great site! Musa <musa_usman@elitemail.org> - Sunday, May 08, 2005 at 11:16:39 (EST) Just found your site. Havent had time to really check it out but I have a question. I'm stripping a old metal and wood bar stool style chair. After taking off 1 layer of paint I saw copper. I found out its totally copper except the arm rests and seat. It's design is a twisted bar style. Am I doing any harm in using a citrus stripper or can I use a more powerful and faster stripper ? Francesca24l <frances566@yahoo.com> Santa Monica', CA USA - Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 16:53:56 (CST) I jost got an estimate for refacing from SEARS. $14.000. My husband and I were dumbfounded. I knew they were pricey, but never imagined to what extent. I asked about the quality of Silestone. The man said it burned if you put a match next to it; of course, they work only Corian. And the cabinets? That was another issue, for he didn't want to, nor did he tell us how he reached the amount of $8,880 for 9 larger cabinet doors and 8 small ones plus the side refacing. Now I am purchasing the items for cleaning the cabinets and the sides, but my question to you is, What is Melamine or Melanine? My cabinets are covered with a thin skinned veneer which is not laminate nor wood but what this person said was cheap veneer or the most basic. Can I clean and paint it? Do I have to peel it off? if so, how? what tools do I need? Thamk you so much for your valuable information. It is so helpful. I painted them using information on another site and after 1 year the paint is not holding up. I used the TSP and steel wool to clean the doors, put on a primer and 2 coats of paint. Your advice to use a liquid sanding product and Kilz is really what will make the paint stick to the doors! I didn't use Kilz and from what I'm now reading, it is probably the best on the market! I am very revved to start my kitchen cabinet painting (again) in the Spring! Thank you so much for all the information. I know this time, the cabinets will be great! Do you have a suggestion for a type or brand of paint? I used an eggshell finish, but it seems too flat. Anyway, I put you in my "favorites" webpages for future reference. Happy Holidays. Tha is a great tip. I was doing research on how to resilver and it is crazy expensive and dangerous. Your tip is very smart and does the job. I do have one question though, I was wondering if you could tell me what you would use to attach the new mirror on the back of the original one? Some type of glue that will not damage the backing of the original mirror. I've fallen in love with this old guy and decided to refinish it. I found and purchased info from Affleckpianotuning.com on taking a piano apart & refinishing. I have been successful at stripping, sanding and staining but I am totally confused about what Don Affleck is saying to do next....Seal with shellac, apply sanding sealer then hand rub. I thought shellac was a top coat like putting on polyurethane. Anyway, I'm looking for sites that can explain the how to's for me so I do this right. So far it's beautiful!! The wood is mahogany and they are approx. 28 years old. I have stripped all the old finish, sanded them and applied a clear coat of finish. The problem I have is that is can't seem to get rid of the marks that were made by the old handles. I have sanded and resanded but the marks are still there. My current project is cleaning, moisturizing and finishing some great, thick-caned bamboo furniture to be used outdoors. It is quite an exercise in patience! The only question I have is how to lighten the greying that has occured over time where the pieces have been exposed to moisture. Is it mildew and would it have to be bleached? Or is there a gentler alternative? Your time is greatly appreciated! Thank you for the wealth of information on your site. It looks like a painted vaneer (sorry about spelling...I'm new to this!) The top is chipping off like paint. I know that I'll never refinish it to look like the original.
