I recently bought a solid oak dining set, over 20 years old. In reading other peoples wood woes, I was able to find the answers to both questions I had. (sticky table top, and moisture damage), both solved. Thanks so much!!!~ Barbara Lutes

Following the Wicker Menu page was extremely easy and helpful. My current project is cleaning, moisturizing and finishing some great, thick-caned bamboo furniture to be used outdoors. It is quite an exercise in patience! The only question I have is how to lighten the greying that has occured over time where the pieces have been exposed to moisture. Is it mildew and would it have to be bleached? Or is there a gentler alternative? Your time is greatly appreciated! Thank you for the wealth of information on your site. Megan

I have a dresser that's about 95 years old. It looks like a painted vaneer (sorry about spelling...I'm new to this!) The top is chipping off like paint. I know that I'll never refinish it to look like the original. The dresser is special because it was my great-grandfather's before he was married. Please don't cringe...but I'd like to paint it, maybe give the paint a stressed look. Any advice? karilowry@hotmail.com

I have just gotten on your site to find out what I do after I have finished stripping an old bookshelf. Wish I would have gotten on sooner! It wasn't too bad, even though it was my first project, a huge bookshelf and I didn't have a clue what I was doing. Anyway my question is now what do I do with the little bits of paint that didn't come off? Do I just go ahead and wash the piece with denatured alcohol or do I need to strip it again? Thanks for your site and sharing your knowledge with us. Annie Barnett

I was thinking it would have to be stripped, but I will try cleaning it first with your tips. I will let you know how it goes & ask questions if you don't mind. Thanks much, Ann

I'm trying to decide if I want to reface or put in all new kitchen cabinets. Mine are around 30 years old and still in pretty good shape but they are the darkest stained cabinets I've ever seen. I tried some paint stipper and it wouldn't even touch them. It would be a whole lot cheaper if I could redo the ones I have because I've got a very big kitchen with lots of cabinets. Any ideas?

I am so happy to have found your site! I think you are wonderful people for taking time to give free information on how to "fix up" old furniture. I knew absolutely nothing about restoration and you have taught me that there is a difference between "refinishing" and "finish restoration." Today I bought a lovely old wardrobe and tomorrow I will begin my very first attempt at "FINISH RESTORATION" I looked the wardrobe over and decided stripping might not be necessary. Thanks to you, I now know how to do the work and what products to use. Sure hope I have success. Thanks again, Charlotte from B.C. Canada

I searched and searched for a site that could give me some info on restoring old furniture and I eventually found yours and I think its just brilliant! I restored a piece of furniture a few years ago, it turned out to be satin wood which, you would not believe if you saw it first as it lay under several coats of dark varnish but after weeks of work, it looks really good now! i just do it for fun, I've never had any training in this but I just love it and coming across your site is just a huge bonus right now! My sister has just give me an old BIG piece with loads of drawers, mirrors etc and I believe it is oak, from what I have stripped already. But after visiting your site I'm not so sure I have done the right thing. It has just an old type of stain on it that a stripper would not remove, so I used some very fine sandpaper to get into the grain, it does look well and I would just love to continue with it, but I just don't want to damage it as I would say it is really old. It has very ameture'dovetailing' on the drawers, which makes me believe it was handmade and really old, but I may be wrong. Anyway it is a beautiful piece of furniture and neither she nor I can afford to get it professionally restoredwhich is why visiting your site has been so helpful. I would appreciate it if you could give me some tips on this as Im not so sure I am going about it the right way. Your site has already been helpful to me, here in Ireland, not that many people restore furniture for fun, it is usually a business procedure and I am finding it difficult to get help wthoutpaying a fortune for it. I got more information free from your site in 10 minutes than I would have in a whole year going through every furniture restoration company in Ireland. Hope you can help me. Either way it has been a treat coming across yor site. Angela P.S. Sorry for this being so longwinded!!!!

I've just started restoring/refinishing furniture. I love the whole process, but especially bringing an old "useless" treasure back to life. Right now I'm working on an old dresser. I was wondering what would be the best way to remove the key hole covers from the front of the drawers. They're in great shape and I sure don't want to damage them in any way. I liked you first page info and honesty. My wife is a faux finisher and we do a about 40% of our work in furniture. The finish we have used most are the Faux Effects products from Vero Beach, Fla. We also use the Coronada Clear Acrylic Polyurethane for all the light colored finishes. I have to do a repair/refinish of two pieces of furniture for a customer, the one piece is a Guy Chaddock table top, and the other piece is a desk in the son's room, mad by Stanley Furniture. Stanley says that an "nitrous cellulose or something like that, was used. Someone else also said that a lacquer was used. If I don't use a lacquer will the lacquer re-act to a water based polyurethane. Thank you, I could go on but who would listen:) George Diener

I loved your site! I found a set of twin head & foot boards at a thrift shop for $40 and thought I'd venture into the uncharted territory of furniture refinishing. This site made the process clear and concise. The "have patience" advice was by far the most valuable! Thank you so much for your help. My little girls now have beautiful "new" beds and I can't wait for my next project..."new" kitchen cabinets!

Wonderful site! I am looking to refinish my daughter's crib for my first grandchild and really want it to be a masterpiece. It is a Jenny Lind with many spindles. I was curious what the best finish would be and what final product to give it the best shine and professional look. Your site was extremely helpful in finding that information (lacquer finish seems the best method). I am curious, however: are there any hidden dangers to refinishing this crib if I strip or stain/lacquer? If I use the method you've described and perform all steps necessary, is there any danger of these products harming the baby?

Have redone a number of pieces in the past and recently found a chair (in someone's trash!) that will be my next pet project. My problem is that it has a broken leg that I'm not quite sure how to fix while maintaining the integrity of an older piece - i'd love some advice.

Am addicted to old trunks, and have many that I have purchased at auctions, ebay, etc. Only buy the ones that need lots of work, as they are usually the least expensive. Work on them as I have time, and would like to see articles or tips from others who have worked on the old beauties. And work it is!!! But I enjoy a challenge and the beautiful results of all that hard work. Have a great day!!!

Using waterlox on newly finished curly maple. There is lots of irregularity on the surface sanded to 600. I suspect the sanding job I did was not with a good block starting at about 220. Would a finish sander been better.

Great site with loads of information! I am in the process of refinishing an antique maple desk. After stripping, staining, and sealing with sanding sealer, I have encountered a problem. I decided to use Tung Oil for my finish. Unfortunately, it seems to be reacting with the sealer, causing the tung oil to *goop* up. I am at a loss as to what to do next, but I shall prevail!! Thanks for all your info!!
