I recently bought a solid oak dining set, over 20 years old. In reading other peoples wood woes, I was able to find the answers to both questions I had. (sticky table top, and moisture damage), both solved.
Thanks so much!!!~ Barbara Lutes
I live in the UK and came accross your excellent whilst reading some more formal UK stores advice sites. Yours is a breath of fresh air and makes my job of re-painting kithen units much easier ...thankyou
Following the Wicker Menu page was extremely easy and helpful. My current project is cleaning, moisturizing and finishing some great, thick-caned bamboo furniture to be used outdoors. It is quite an exercise in patience!
The only question I have is how to lighten the greying that has occured over time where the pieces have been exposed to moisture. Is it mildew and would it have to be bleached? Or is there a gentler alternative?
Your time is greatly appreciated! Thank you for the wealth of information on your site.

First time visit--looking how and where to buy wicker repair supplies. Got answers-- now on to the job of repairing many pieces of wicker furniture that come through our shop--- Housewarmings by Horigans--- I have been reparing/ restoring/ refinishing items for our home and retail shop for the past 40 years. It is good to know that there are sites like yours--- Thanks John H.
Thanks so much for sharing this information.
We're doing kitchen cabinet refinishing, painting.
This was simple and easy to understand information.
Great site and I definitely will share this site with others and I will be back too.
Have a great 4th of July.
I have a dresser that's about 95 years old. It looks like a painted vaneer (sorry about spelling...I'm new to this!)
The top is chipping off like paint. I know that I'll never refinish it to look like the original. The dresser is special because it was my great-grandfather's before he was married. Please don't cringe...but I'd like to paint it, maybe give the paint a stressed look. Any advice? karilowry@hotmail.com
I AM IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO REDO MY KITCHEN CABINETS BY REFACING/REPAINTING THEM. YOUR SITE IS VERY INFORMATIVE. THANK YOU.
Refinishing Kitchen cabinets
Do I have this right?
Clean thoughly with TSP, wipe with minirel spirits.
Lightly wet sand existing clear coat with 320 grit.
Remove any residue with tack rag when dry.
Apply light coat of: Olympic 1 Step Oil Base Poly with Stain.
I had read an article a few months ago about refinishing a surface using Wood Glue. Do you have any information on this?
I have just gotten on your site to find out what I do after I have finished stripping an old bookshelf. Wish I would have gotten on sooner! It wasn't too bad, even though it was my first project, a huge bookshelf and I didn't have a clue what I was doing.
Anyway my question is now what do I do with the little bits of paint that didn't come off? Do I just go ahead and wash the piece with denatured alcohol or do I need to strip it again? Thanks for your site and sharing your knowledge with us. Annie Barnett
I LOVE THIS PAGE. PLEASE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Currently working on a wicker porch swing with a good frame but the Lloyd loom paper weave is totaled. Also a Lloyd loom rodker with a leg badly broken about 18 inches from the floor. Any sugestions where to get sheet Lloyd loom and how to fix a bad break?
First, thanks for the information on fuming oak. I have heard about fuming but never found specific information before. I am building a cherry project at this time. I am wondering if fuming works on cherry -- any draw backs to giving it a try?
antique table and chairs
I liked your site. Made a lot of sense. I have some inherited antique painted (several times) wicker furniture that has been outside and is badly chipped, lot of loose paint. I was thinking it would have to be stripped, but I will try cleaning it first with your tips. I will let you know how it goes & ask questions if you don't mind. Thanks much, Ann
I'm trying to decide if I want to reface or put in all new kitchen cabinets. Mine are around 30 years old and still in pretty good shape but they are the darkest stained cabinets I've ever seen. I tried some paint stipper and it wouldn't even touch them. It would be a whole lot cheaper if I could redo the ones I have because I've got a very big kitchen with lots of cabinets. Any ideas?
Good information for a new "do it yourselfer". I am preparing to repaint my kitchen cabinets.
thank you for the information
Finding your websight was like finding a needle in a haystack.
Congratulations on finally setting up your site. I am sure the website will become a internet legend
No matter where you are on the world wide web, your site will always bring me back cause it is very useful.
How do I remove a burn mark on a mahogany chest?

I finally found some information and places to get materials to try to recane an old chair bottom. Thanks. Don't know if I will invest in everything since I only have the one chair. Just might have to go with a seat pad. Nice to know I can at least find the stuff now.
I have (in wicker) 1 sofa and 2 love seat 1 rocker and 4 chairs. My cushions are sinking as the rubberized webbing has stretched. Each end in bracketed and slips/inserts into grooved slots in the frame of chairs. Do you have suggestions where we could find the supplies for this project? Thank you

I have a (el-cheapo)chair that was landfill bound. Perhaps now, after reading a bit on your site, I'll try to fix it. What the hell. It's either kill it even deader(?!)or maybe it'll be Easter for the chair. I have not figured out what the best type of paint is to use on wicker.
several years ago I refin.a honey coloured oak dinrm suite into a dark walnut colour. Now I would like to refin back to its orig.colour. I have stripped the fin.but still have the dark colour should I bleach or is there some other . product

I have wood kitchen cabinets with baked on paint on doors. I have been told strippers will not work. Any info pro or con about this?
Thank you for the information! Very appreciated. I have several pieces of beautiful antiques that I am in the process of restoring. Do you have any information on stain removal? . Many of my pieces were stained, then painted. I have stripped the paint, but the reddish stain/dye remains. It is Mahogany wood...what is the best way to refinish. I would like it to look more like Oak. The mahogany was way too dark.. Thanks so much for any help!

I really like your comment about the voice activated system to tell jokes and scare the wits out of you.
Thank you for this wonderful site! I just bought an old wicker set (couch, chair and two tables) for $30 and my husband thought that I was crazy because there are some holes that needed to be patched, and the paint is chipping off. With the help of your website I think that I'll be able to repair it! He'll change his mind once he sees the end product!
Thank you for the simple steps to tackle preparing metal (ur........) cabinets. I hope that I will find ways to update the look of these most outdated cabinets.
I LOVE THIS PAGE. PLEASE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
I am so happy to have found your site! I think you are wonderful people for taking time to give free information on how to "fix up" old furniture. I knew absolutely nothing about restoration and you have taught me that there is a difference between "refinishing" and "finish restoration." Today I bought a lovely old wardrobe and tomorrow I will begin my very first attempt at "FINISH RESTORATION" I looked the wardrobe over and decided stripping might not be necessary. Thanks to you, I now know how to do the work and what products to use. Sure hope I have success. Thanks again, Charlotte from B.C. Canada
great advice on painting cabinets! most useful and useable advice I found so far. And you should get a medal if you had a 4-year-old chatterbox "helping" you!
Thanks
i want to repaint my dresser walnut color can you help me?
I love your site because my furniture is inherited and at least twice as old as I (66) and beginning to wobble as I. The other day I was trying to move a dresser downstairs - dropped it on my toe (not your department) and against the radiator. Big gouge. I have heard of "amalgamating." Yes? No? Thanks.

Thank you for your site, it was very helpful. I bought an antique mahogany end table at a thrift store that has been painted with latex and am going to attempt to "fix it." As I am having trouble locating a picture of the it by the manufacturer (Irwin Pendleton)to go by, I am slightly intimidated as to how to procede. I really appreciated your site and it's clarity on how to go about stripping, I hope I don't ruin the piece.
Thanks again.

I needed exactly what you feature. Thank You & God Bless America.
My wicker set was on a too hot proch for two summers. Result - fading and drying out. I cleaned it with Murphy's Oil Soap and water, but it still looks faded. Is there some type of oil or other product that will restore the golden color and lustre of my wicker set? I was thinking mineral oil or some such thing?
Any suggestions?

I am refinishing an antique dresser that has damaged veneer on the top. How do I remove the old veneer? Thanks.
Thank you
I searched and searched for a site that could give me some info on restoring old furniture and I eventually found yours and I think its just brilliant! I restored a piece of furniture a few years ago, it turned out to be satin wood which, you would not believe if you saw it first as it lay under several coats of dark varnish but after weeks of work, it looks really good now! i just do it for fun, I've never had any training in this but I just love it and coming across your site is just a huge bonus right now! My sister has just give me an old BIG piece with loads of drawers, mirrors etc and I believe it is oak, from what I have stripped already. But after visiting your site I'm not so sure I have done the right thing. It has just an old type of stain on it that a stripper would not remove, so I used some very fine sandpaper to get into the grain, it does look well and I would just love to continue with it, but I just don't want to damage it as I would say it is really old. It has very ameture'dovetailing' on the drawers, which makes me believe it was handmade and really old, but I may be wrong. Anyway it is a beautiful piece of furniture and neither she nor I can afford to get it professionally restoredwhich is why visiting your site has been so helpful.
I would appreciate it if you could give me some tips on this as Im not so sure I am going about it the right way.
Your site has already been helpful to me, here in Ireland, not that many people restore furniture for fun, it is usually a business procedure and I am finding it difficult to get help wthoutpaying a fortune for it. I got more information free from your site in 10 minutes than I would have in a whole year going through every furniture restoration company in Ireland.
Hope you can help me. Either way it has been a treat coming across yor site.
Angela
P.S. Sorry for this being so longwinded!!!!

I've just started restoring/refinishing furniture. I love the whole process, but especially bringing an old "useless" treasure back to life. Right now I'm working on an old dresser. I was wondering what would be the best way to remove the key hole covers from the front of the drawers. They're in great shape and I sure don't want to damage them in any way. Thanks so much for your informative website. I've been taking it all in and have been helped in many areas. God bless!

am trying to reface my kitchen cupboards and need all the help i can get.your web site seems to be very helpful. hopefully i can purchase all the necessary tools etc. thru your web. thanks ejs
I've resently put a large white ring on my mahogany dining table (guess that potholder wasn't a good trivet). I'm planning to try the methods you give to remove it without refinishing. I'll let you know how it goes.
I liked you first page info and honesty. My wife is a faux finisher and we do a about 40% of our work in furniture. The finish we have used most are the
Faux Effects products from Vero Beach, Fla.
We also use the Coronada Clear Acrylic Polyurethane for all the light colored finishes. I have to do a repair/refinish of two pieces of furniture for a customer, the one piece is a Guy Chaddock table top, and the other piece is a desk in the son's room, mad by Stanley Furniture. Stanley says that an "nitrous cellulose or something like that, was used. Someone else also said that a lacquer was used. If I don't use a lacquer will the lacquer re-act to a water based polyurethane.
Thank you, I could go on but who would listen:)

Do you have a product that will remove the smell of smoke and soot from furniture, we had a house fire and I would like to refinish my cargo furniture. Thank you, Leah
It was a pleasure reading your web page. I am an avid (poly) refinisher ,since reading your article on lacquer applications my next piece will be done with lacquer. thanks
I loved your site! I found a set of twin head & foot boards at a thrift shop for $40 and thought I'd venture into the uncharted territory of furniture refinishing. This site made the process clear and concise. The "have patience" advice was by far the most valuable! Thank you so much for your help. My little girls now have beautiful "new" beds and I can't wait for my next project..."new" kitchen cabinets!
Wonderful site! I am looking to refinish my daughter's crib for my first grandchild and really want it to be a masterpiece. It is a Jenny Lind with many spindles. I was curious what the best finish would be and what final product to give it the best shine and professional look. Your site was extremely helpful in finding that information (lacquer finish seems the best method). I am curious, however: are there any hidden dangers to refinishing this crib if I strip or stain/lacquer? If I use the method you've described and perform all steps necessary, is there any danger of these products harming the baby?
I am working on my kitchen cabinets and I want to repaint but there are already several coats of old paint. Is it ok to just paint on another coat or should I strip the old paint off. Thanks
Have redone a number of pieces in the past and recently found a chair (in someone's trash!) that will be my next pet project. My problem is that it has a broken leg that I'm not quite sure how to fix while maintaining the integrity of an older piece - i'd love some advice.
great design ! very nice page !!! keep up the good work

HELP!! A few years back I stained my kitchen cupboards Ebony, yes black, now I have beautiful new dark blue counter tops and I want to paint my cupboards I also have a black refrigerator?? Any suggestions??
Am addicted to old trunks, and have many that I have purchased at auctions, ebay, etc. Only buy the ones that need lots of work, as they are usually the least expensive. Work on them as I have time, and would like to see articles or tips from others who have worked on the old beauties.
And work it is!!! But I enjoy a challenge and the beautiful results of all that hard work.
Have a great day!!!
I LOVE THIS PAGE. KEEP IT UP.

very nice page !!! keep up the good work
Using waterlox on newly finished curly maple. There is lots of irregularity on the surface sanded to 600. I suspect the sanding job I did was not with a good block starting at about 220. Would a finish sander been better.

Thank you for clearing up the myth about having to completely strip the kitchen cupboards before repainting them. I was told that the new paint wouldn't adhere unless they were stripped.
Sincerely,
Kim Broad
I realy enjoyed surfin' your website ! bye bye, Jill
Great site with loads of information!
I am in the process of refinishing an antique maple desk. After stripping, staining, and sealing with sanding sealer, I have encountered a problem. I decided to use Tung Oil for my finish. Unfortunately, it seems to be reacting with the sealer, causing the tung oil to *goop* up. I am at a loss as to what to do next, but I shall prevail!!
Thanks for all your info!!
I would like to purchase your counter top water filter: However, the button to order doesn't work, you don't have a phone # or contact page anywhere on your site - what's the deal?
