I found most of what I needed to clean up and fix a wicker rocker I purchased at a yard sale today. I still need to find out how to cover the springs in the base of the chair and the cushion before I upholster them. Any ideas? Thanks, Barb

I've loved the information on your site and found what I've looked at very useful. I've done many home projects, craft projects, painting projects, writing projects, community projects, and every thing else that can be named. However, I want to faux finish (paint) my 80's looking kitchen cabinets and feel totally intimadated at starting the project. This is simply a project of no return. Someone suggested simply slapping a paint brush full of paint on one cabinet and then I'd have no choice but to plunge in and refinish all my cabinets because I've already ruined them with the slap of paint. Since I've been stalling for 3 years on this project, that's probably a good idea. Oh, dear, you can see I have a problem with being a chatterbox as you mentioned on this website. So--any faux paint ideas (mainly how to get motivated, clean, tips on not feeling overwhelmed, etc.) would be more than welcomed! gjs

I am starting a refinishing and repair project on 2 end tables, 1 coffee table, two chairs and a loveseat, all wicker. I believe that the pieces are over 60 years old but have no way to tell. I picked up two books at the local library: All About Wicker by Patricia Corbin and Collecting & Restoring Wicker Furniture by Richard Saunders. Both books are very helpful. Two questions. Is there a more current resource that could help me to date the wicker pieces? Also, is Rockler the best resource for repair materials? I love in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area but cannot find any local resources that handle materials. Thanks for you web page and help. John O'Donnell

We have some Natural Finish Adirondack chairs that the manufacturer suggested be treated with Boiled Linseed Oil a few times per year to protect the finish. My husband applied it and didn't rub off the coating, and now the chairs have a sticky residue. Someone suggested using paint thinner and stripping the linseed oil off, but I am afraid that will strip the original stain as well. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

I had the paint store mix some dark red paint with stain to give my oak t.v. cabinet some color. The trouble is, it's dry but the red still wipes off. Has it not soaked into the wood? The wood was not painted before. Is the paint on too thick? Should I sand and start over? Please help. Thanks.

Thank you for providing such useful information on your site! I was also looking for information on repairing veneer on antiques. Would I treat it the same as you described? Its painted on, but the paint is peeling. Its a vanity. The veneer is in great condition, but has been painted over. A lot of the paint is peeling right off, but in some areas, I'm not sure what to do. Would it be safe to use stripper on such an old piece? Or is sanding the better way to go? Would I just glue the veneer back down in the areas that are needed? Or do I need to prep it in some way? Thank you in advance for your help. Your website truly is awesome for those who are clueless in refinishing, such as myself! But I want to learn more and will continue to visit your website! Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for including information about how to make repairs to wicker furniture. I have a rocker that has an egg-sized hole in the front of the arm (my husband was practicing his golf swing in the house!). With your information, I should be able to repair the damage. Please do not send me any newsletters or distribute my email address to others. Thank You!

I like the site very much. I came to it to find out what to do with an antique wicker doll carriage I bought at auction. The wicker is in good shape, but it's very dirty and appears to have no finish at all. It looks like a gentle but thorough cleaning and maybe some lacquer to protect it. No one will really be using it. It will be an accent piece in our home. thanks for your help.

Thank you so much for the free, practical information you provide. I just inherited some antique furniture in a variety of woods (cedar, mahagany, oak) and was afraid to touch it for fear of ruining its value. Right now I'm in the cleaning/conditioning phase, trying to see if I really have to refinish. Thanks for your wonderful site.

Almost forgot, I have a complete dining room set that is blond mahogony finished with a wax finish instead of varnish or shellac and is un exteme need if refinishing. What should I uae to clean or strip the wook so I can either stain and varnish or polyurethane it or just leave it cleaned and fresh. There is very little damage of any sort to the wood itself. How hard is it to re-apply the same kind or finish or is it even a good idea?

We recently received a dining room table from my in-laws house. They were heavy smokers, although no one has smoked in the house for the last 10 years. My father in law refinsed it many, many years ago, while he was smoking. I couldn't find anything on the site about this particular issue. Would refinishing be the only way to get this odor out? Thank you.

Very informative site. Before happening upon your site I was all ready to simply sand, Kilz, paint and try to regrain my cabinets in a light oak finish. But after reading the indepth section on veneering, I just might attempt that instead. I realized that paint would not look professional, but new kitchen cabinets are not in the budget for 2002, and I like the ideas and techniques on your site. Hopefully I can do this, I have printed all the sections on veneering from your site and appreciated the information!!! AAAA++++

I have a two tables from India and one from Indonesia. They have an unusual stain. It ranges from tobacco colored to mahogony to cherry. One is more reddish than the others. One is antique teak and the others are mango wood. I would like to get a similar effct on some of my less exotic furnishings. Any ideas?

Hi I stumbled on your site while looking for advice on what to do with our kitchen-dining room table. It is solid cherry, with beautiful grain, and in constant use. We have noticed that it scratches very easily. I tried lemon oil but it does nothing to the scratches. A roll of electrical tape was left on the table overnight and completely ate through the finish in one spot. What can I do to minmize the scratches and that bad spot? Right now I do not want to refinish the table, but would eventually like to change the finish to something more durable than the lacquer currently on it. thank you Colleen Writt

I am looking on information on how to paint, or restain flat, cheap, 17 yr. old wood laminate cupboards. I have lightly sanded them, my husband told me to stop as I would remove the laminate.I would settle to just restain them the same ugly color, but don't know what products to use, and in what order. The sanding looks good to me, but I want the ugly stain color gone. I saw a wood bleach product, just looking for info so I don't totally turn this into one of those "oh no, look what I messed up now projects".

Your site is most helpful. My question is about white-wood (what is it?)that Ansco Camera used in the 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 View Camera's? Ansco painted same with a special tinted grey paint and I wish to remove the grey-material (75% is gone now)and prepare the wood for a deep cherry-stain finish. Can you furnish the recommended refinishing chemicals, stain and wood protection; with polished brass parts and a fine cherry-finish will transfer my two cameras from "Dawg-looking" into beautiful works of camera-art. Nice to find a place just to get info, I am just starting to search out older pieces to refinish, antique and paint roses, etc., to decorate the piece. Have just begun my first, a large chest and am having difficulty getting the paint off, has at least 3 coat. Have even considered lye, (or drain cleaners - e.g. Drano), but will look for another commercial type stripper first. Will try to find the one you recommend here. I would like to reface our very cheap, badly marred, dark, vertically grooved, particle board composition kitchen cupboard doors. Is there a product on the market that you could recommend to cover door fronts to be painted? I prefer something that will adhere to the surface, and plan, if necessary to nail or glue a narrow molding around the door periphery. I am on a limited budget and sincerely welcome any suggestion you may offer. Perhaps you might also direct me to any websites that might be helpful. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. this is a question, rather than a comment. hopefully you can help. we just aquired bunches of antiques from my mother-in-law. our question relates to one of our new chests. we think it's heart pine (looks just like the floors in our 120 year old house). we think it's never been finished. no evidence that way, anyway. there's water stains inside it. great wafts of white. how do we clean it. do we clean it? what should we use on it to keep it healthy...wax, tung oil? we have several antiques around. a walnut and maple duncan-fife dining table and chairs (my dad refinished it. UGH!) from my great-grandparents, my husbands grandfathers 'government desk' -probably pine, definatly massive, a mahogany 4-poster bed frame (that had been painted, SEVERAL times) and all the wood our house is made of(heart pine, several times painted and in the process of being stripped. you should see the horrible things that were done to it). lots of it is unfinished. do you have any recommendations for us as far as cleaning, rehydration of the wood (some pieces we just got are VERY dry) and general feeding and care of our new-old babies. thank you ever so much for your time. Thanks for your website. Only had a brief chance to look. I need to have several pieces of ca 1910 wicker reworked in the New Orleans area, and have had a time finding someone who really knew what they were doing. There is a shop in Chicago that was tops, but I've forgotten their name. Thanks Jim Hawkins

I only wish I'd thought to look for your site before I began "restoring" my pub table. The only real problem was the lacquer was worn off in places. I think I've overdone cleaning it with Hope's Refinisher, as some of the wood is awfully light -- almost looking bare. I appreciate what I've learned from your website -- thanks!

Good information. I am trying to decide if I should strip an old desk & chair or send it out to a pro. I have never done anything like this before so I am a little hestitant to take on the project. I am afraid I might lose interest, or find it to labor intensive and not finish it; then it will sit in my garage forever!! It is such a beautiful piece of furniture but it is too dark (very dark maroon stain finish. I want to lighten it up. It also has crack in the varnish? or coating. Thanks for the info. If you have anything enlighting to add please reply :) Debi

I think you should be a little less rigid about polyurethane ;-) I agree about the value of antiques, but for every day use you can't beat polyurethane. Spraying Lacquer is extremely difficult and wasteful, and with a brush it doesn't settle nearly as well as polyurethane. I have never seen it crack in 25 years and we live in a harsh climate of hot, dry ,cold and dammp weather. kj

Thank you so much for the instructions on the care and repair of wicker furniture. I a went to the flea market and purchased two woe-be-gone ornate antique wicker arm chairs. Dry and in spots broken, I wanted to do the best I could to restore the beauty, even just a placement in the garden for one season. Now with all of the formulas you so kindly have given people on the internet, it is possible and hopeful to restore these lovely chairs and loveingly give them a second life. So many thanks your way. Hello, Your web site seems to be quite informative. THANK YOU! My question is reqarding painting unfinished furniture. It seems that, per your instruction...we need to sand the furniture, seal it with a sealer, then paint (with the color) and seal it again. I have 3 questions...1-Do I have the process right so far? 2-What type/grade of sandpaper do I use? 3-What type of protective sealer do you recommend for the final coat(s) (2-3 final coats, right?)? I am a first timer and am trying to get as much info as possible!!! Thanks for your response! Diane Mitchell

Of all the methods you give to clean and refinish wicker furniture. You don't recommend any kind of primer and paint to use to paint the wicker.... Could you tell me what would be best to get a high gloss finish that could be left outside, and, not turn to chaulk? I was thinking that an oil based paint would be best. Thank you.

I am a retired lady, grandmother to 16 grandchildren, and beginning to explore refinishing furniture. I decided to start with a "curbside treasure" figuring I had nothing to lose if I messed it up. When I put it in my car and brought it home, my husband thought I was crazy. It was a mess - very elderly and coming apart at all joinings, with a variety of finishes and with water stained legs from standing in a wet basement. I took the table completely apart, and after stripping and sanding it down to bare wood, what was underneath all the years of use and abuse was elegant mahogony with a beautiful grain! I don't want to "stain" the wood because it is a simply beautiful natural color. What I want to achieve in a finish is the look of the wood when I applied mineral spirits to it. How do I accomplish this look?

I am helping a friend who is trying to figure out how to restore a dining room table, that has a problem with the finish. Found a few articles that I believe will be very helpful for us. Thank you.

I scanned over your site and I was very impressed. Good job. I use to have a business back in Ohio of refinishing furniture and gave it to my brother when I started working my farm full time. He still has the business and thats all he does full time. that was 16 years ago. I don`t have the farm anymore and I am going to get back into refinishing furniture. Your site was a good refresher course for me. Take care and put me on your mailing list. If you need to contact me, I`m at 847-816-8485. By the way, I didn`t see anywhere in your site about goggles for the first timer, its happened to you and its happened to me. Be good!

Thank you for your wonderful information! I have an antique piano I inherited this month. I was very nervous about attempting to refinish it myself. With the info from your site, I now feel a bit more confident. Wish me luck!
