Strip Deep Carving

Email question:

I want to strip chairs that have a detailed carved design on them. Years ago I saw a program on television that spoke of an ideal product for this situation. It was applied to the surface, allowed to dry, and then pulled off with relative ease - bringing all of the paint residue with it. Does this product still exist? Where can I purchase it? Is it really as good as it sounds?

Hi Denise

Miracle Paint Strippers

I haven't seen any of the miracle paint strippers for quite a while, but I imagine they're still around. I tried one once and it didn't do much at all.

Lots Of Patience While Stripping Deep Carvings

The best, quickest and easiest way to strip paint or an old finish is the old fashioned way starting with a big bunch of patience. Take a look at our pages Strip and Stripping Basic for some basic stripping information and some readily available tools.

Let The Stripper Do The Work When You Strip Deep Carving

The main thing is to let the paint stripper do the work. Let it sit for a good length of time, then test it to see if the paint is loosened. If it hasn't loosened, then apply another coat of stripper to the old and let it sit some more. If it seems that you're working hard at removing the paint you're not letting the stripper handle the hard part. Use some of the tools we recommend and it makes the job easier.

The Citristrip paint and varnish stripping gel mentioned has a long open time, so one application will stay working for a long time and it's easier on your health than the older types of stripper.

Wrap Stripper With Plastic When You Strip Deep Carving

Another handy trick to use if the paint is deep in carvings and doesn't want to soften is to apply a good thick coat of paint stripper and wrap the piece with plastic, such as a plastic wrap or plastic bread sacks. Paint drop cloths can be used for larger pieces. Let the stripper work overnight, then apply a new coat of stripper in the morning to reactivate the old stuff, let it sit for an hour or so, then it should be easier to strip the deep carving.

My question was about stripping deep carvings. I especially appreciate the information about applying stripper and then wrapping the area with plastic wrap overnight. Great tip!
