Dark stains around hinges and latch

When you have dark stains around hinges and the latch on an antique ice box it's best to leave them to help show the age of the piece and help to determine that it's an antique.

Hi Robert

Stains Around Hinges And Latch On Antique Ice Box

I assume you're talking about an antique ice box. I wouldn't remove the dark stains from around the hinges and latch, because they're part of what gives the ice box character and sets it apart from reproductions.

Household Bleach Solution

If it's something other than an antique you might try a solution of one part household bleach and nine parts of water. Apply it with a cotton swab and let it sit a while. It might lighten the dark stains a little. You can neutralize the bleaching action by rubbing the area with a cut lemon.
