Subject: Restor-a-Finish muddy

Email question:

Dear Tom,

I am trying to restore the luster to my furniture. What polish do you reccomend? I've tried many and can't get my furniture to that well oiled, "cared for" look.

While I'm writing, I'd like to mention that I used your Restore A Finish product and it did nothing, in fact the table I used it on looked worse.

Help!

Best regards,

Ruth

Email reply:

Hi Ruth

You may have a build up of polish that needs to be removed. When you get a build up it quite often looks worse when you add more polish. Most spray polishes contain silicone which will make a new finish appear good for a short time, but over time with repeated use will have the opposite effect.

There are two good cleaners Prelude Furniture Cleaner and Orange oil on our cleaner catalog page.

Some tools for cleaning, with descriptions are on our Restoration web page.

Here are a couple of pages on our web site that give information for cleaning: www.refinishfurniture.com/furniture_restoration_procedure.htm www.refinishfurniture.com/furniture_cleaning_basic.htm

You can also use the site search feature on each page of our web site for more information on our site.

I'm sorry the Restor-a-Finish didn't work, it generally does a pretty good job. It's possible that if you have a buildup of polish the Restor-a_Finish just dissolved the buildup and smeared it around. If the finish is sound and not faded and you don't want to change color at all it's best to just clean off the old build up.

We just use a damp cloth and buff with a soft dry cloth on our furniture. If you want a little more protection the Antiquax is good. Use it very sparingly and you'll have the best results. Always remove old wax before applying more.

It's best to stay away from spray polishes.

Later I received this reply to my suggestions to Ruth:

I recently wrote you to say that the Restore A Finish made my furniture muddy.  You answered by saying that perhaps there was a build-up of dirt and spray polish on the piece.  You were right!  I bought your kit for cleaning furniure, used the cleaner, then the restorer and then the past wax and the piece now has a beautiful sheen.  Short of refinishing this can make old furniture appear lovingly cared for and valuable.  In fact it now looks like the distressed (new) furniture in all the stores.

Thanks. I love your site and your products.

Ruth
