Gazebos and pergolas are very close cousins in design. Teahouse and gazebo are fairly synonymous in some situations. Arbors could be loosly described as mini pergolas and a trellis could be and generally is used on all four of the others as a place for decorative and fragrant vines to grow. |

Pergola
Pergolas are generally flat on top with trellis on top for vines to grow on and with or without trellis on the sides. A pergola was originally to provide a shaded walkway from one place to another or shade on a terrace. It's common now to have a pergola with shading vines in place of a gazebo for a table and chairs or picnic table for outside dining or just relaxing. ArborArbors started their usefulness centuries ago by taking small trees or sturdy shrubs on either side of a path and tying them together over the path, then growing vines on them to provide shade and protection from the weather. TrellisThen comes the ever useful trellis. A trellis is a latticework of wood, plastic or metal that is designed for vines to grow on or arranged in such a manner as to provide shade or partial shade. Trellises are used against the side of a house for climbing roses or all sorts of vines. They're used on the sides of gazebos, pergolas and arbors or many other of almost limitless uses TeahouseProbably the most important is the teahouse. A gazebo is frequently designated as a teahouse, although teahouses may be of various structures depending on the cultural tea ceremony. Plans for gazebo, teahouse, trellis, pergola and arbor
